    LANDSCAPE DESIGN TIPS

-Succulents have BEAUTIFUL FORMS-

Aloe and agave look like stars. Aeonium

 and Echeveria look like roses.

-A variety of forms, colors, textures make pretty combinations.

-MIX TEXTURES combining a large size

leaf plant with a medium size leaf plant

with small size leaf plant. Use upright

spiky plants as accents or mass upright spiky plants in colonies.

-AVOID A JUMBLED MEDLEY using too

many different kinds of plants all

together.  Do not use one of

everything.  It is best to MASS AND

 REPEAT just a few species.

-NEVER MIX YELLOWISH GREEN WITH

GRAY FOLIAGE or something looks sick.

Mix yellowish green foliage with dark

green and warm colored foliage.  Mix

gray foliage with dark green, blue,

 purple, cool colored foliage.

 -COMBINE SUCCULENTS WITH OTHER

TYPES OF PLANTS, but plan carefully.

Not all plants look right with them.  In

nature we see succulents or cacti

combined with trees and shrubs.  Make

sure other plants have similar water

 requirements.

 -FLOWER BED, FLOWER BORDERS,

  retaining walls need TALL VARIETIES

   like Kalanchoe, Hylotelephium,

   Euphorbia.

 -BEST SHOWY FLOWERS- Try Sedum

   Telephium, Aloe, Crassula, Hoya,

   Kalanchoe.

-BOLD IMPACT FAST-Try Sedum

    'Autumn Joy', Bilbergia, Bulbinella,

   Cotyledon Macrantha, Cotyledon

   Orbiculata, Crassula multicava- fast

colonizers, fast offsets, tons of babies

for fast growth for cuttings to spread

around. More  bang for your bucks-

   a little goes a longway.

-USE LOW KINDS like Sedum, Crassula,

   ice plant, Echeveria, some Senecio,

Sempervivum, in rock gardens, at the

   border front and between stepping

   stones on paths.

                  PROBLEM AREAS

-For DRY SLOPES where water runs off

   without soaking in, erosion control,

try ice plants and most succulents.

 -For EUCALYPTUS FOREST FLOORS

  where nothing grows, try Jade,

  Echeveria, Aeoniums, Aloe, Yucca,

  Cotyledon, Crassula tetragona, Agave

   and all without summer irrigation!

 -GREAT FOR SEASIDES! Tolerant of

  ocean spray, wind, salt.

 -FOR POOL AREAS requiring little

litter to blow in the water.
